My pomegranate painting
The pomegranate is a complex fruit that has historical, biblical, and cultural lore. It is a symbol that has represented life, death, fertility, and spirituality for thousands of years. Pomegranate name derives from the medieval Latin pomum(apple) and granatum (seeded), meaning "seeded apple".
Because of its many clustered seeds it has universally been seen as a symbol of fertility. In Greek Mythology, pomegranates are associated with the story of Persephone. In Persian and Middle Eastern Culture, the fruit is seen as a symbol of blessing and light. Buddhism also notes the pomegranate as a blessed fruit. In Judaism, tradition teaches that there are 613 seeds which is a reminder of the 613 commandments of the Torah. In Christianity, the pomegranate is seen as a symbol of resurrection and redemption.
Modern day artists have also embraced the pomegranate as a way to celebrate beauty, abundance, feminism, duality, transformation and life.
The title of my painting “ Blessings Within” definitely takes all this cultural background into account. However, for me, I can see a direct connection to this tough little fruit . Daily life with a chronic illness has certainly conditioned me to live with a mask…or tough exterior. My experience may not be relatable at first. I might even seem convoluted or messy just like the pithy chambers of the pomegranate. However, what I can share from my journey is that there are abundant blessings around us. Some may be small or inconsequential to others… but to recognize and acknowledge the divine spark / or natural wonder in ourselves, around us…and within others makes life sweet.
